Education proves value of cooperationversity collaborations l

As the United States and China continued trade talks this week, companies and industries in both countries, including the education sector, will be hoping for a sign

ificant breakthrough that can lift Sino-US relations from the current morass and end the tit-for-tat trade war that

has seriously affected exchanges of goods, technology and people between our nations.

For Sino-US joint-venture universities, such as Duke Kunshan University, in China’s eastern p

rovince of Jiangsu, the ramifications of a further ramp-up in tensions would be felt acutely.

Fortunately, the impact of the trade dispute on these educational joint ve

ntures has been minimal. But naturally there has been uncertainty surrounding the

issuance of work and student visas (although the Chinese government has been quick to make assurances), and p

arents have raised questions about the sustainability of such projects should relations sour further.

More than ever before, it is important to remember that joint-venture educational p

rojects highlight the importance and value of true mutually beneficial co

operation. Today, there is hardly a single major global problem for which the long-term solution does not depend on

close collaboration between the US and China, respectively the largest and second-largest economies in the world.

That resolution will not pass the Senate, and you can take that

back to whoever sent you here,” she says, citing that the deal doesn’t have a

single Republican in favor of the proposal and “the k

ey to good legislation is to tailor something that you write so that it can pass, and you can get a step ahead.”

When a girl urges her to vote yes anyway, Feinstein replies, “I may do that … but it’s not a good resolution.”

In a statement Friday night about the confrontation, Feinstein said she “always welcomes the oppo

rtunity to hear from Californians who feel passionately about this issue and it remains a top priority of mine.”

”Unfortunately, it was a brief meeting but I want the children to know they were heard loud and clear. I have been and rem

ain committed to doing everything I can to enact real, meaningful climate change legislation,” Feinstein said.

”We had a spirited discussion and I presented the group with my draft resolution

that provides specific responses to the climate change crisis, which I plan to introduce soon.”

The conversation at times grew heated, especially when Feinstein dismissed the group’s request due to their tone and their youth.

A young woman tells Feinstein she’s “looking at the faces of th

people who will be living with these consequences” of climate change.

”I’ve been doing this for 30 years. I know what I’m doing,” Feinstein says. “You come in here and you say, ‘It has to be my way or the highway.’ I don’t respond to that.”

”I’ve gotten elected. I just ran,” she continues. “I was elected by almost a million-vote plurality, and I know what I’m doing. So, you know, maybe people should listen a little bit.”

In the video, Feinstein also asks a girl how old she is as the girl says politicians should listen to the people they represent. The girl replies that she is 16.

”Well, you didn’t vote for me,” the senator says.

Later, a young woman stresses the need for a climate plan with “bold, transformative action,” and Feinstein replies, “Well, you know better than I do.”

”So I think one day you should run for the Senate, and then you do it your way. But in the meantime, I just won a big election,” the senator adds.

The three higher-end models reverse Samsung’s unpopul

decision to put the fingerprint scanner on the back of the device. Now built into the disp

lay itself, the “ultrasonic fingerprint reader” compliments its Face Unlock feature but prom

ises more security. It doesn’t just take pictures of your fingerprint; the company says it uses machine-learning-bas

ed algorithm to read 3D fingerprints through ultrasonic sound waves.(Fingerprint data is stored only on the dev

ice itself, according to Samsung). The S10e features a capacitive fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone instead.

Not surprisingly, Samsung is upping its camera game. The winner for the most cameras goes to the Gala

xy S10 5G, which offers a total of six, including a dual-front camera with a 3D-depth lens to handle th

ings like augmented reality. It has a quadruple rear camera with a wide, telephoto and (another) 3D depth lens.

The S10 and S10+ feature nearly the same without the 3D depth len

s on the back. However, the S10e has single front- and dual rear-cameras in wide and ultra-wide lens.

Tiny tyrannosaur fossil discovery changes the dinosaur timeline

yrannosaurus rex wasn’t always the king of the dinosaurs. Before they became towering predators, tyrannosaurs star

ted out much smaller, and a newly discovered fossil is helping fill the gap between those two extremes.

The fossil findings are detailed in a study published Thursday in Communications Biology.

The dinosaur fossil was found in Utah, where it lived 96 million years ago in a lush delta during the Cretaceous period. It’s been

named Moros intrepidus, which means “harbinger of doom.” The dinosaur lived at the end of th

e allosaurs’ reign at the top of the food chain and before Tyrannosaurus rex arrived.

It’s now the oldest tyrannosaur from the Cretaceous period found in North America.

Medium-size tyrannosaur fossils have been found from the Jur

assic period, about 150 million years ago. And then, about 81 million years ago during the

Cretaceous, tyrannosaurs grew into giant predators and replaced allosaurs as the top of the food chain.

Moreover, in January, financial data continued its trend of

structural optimization from the previous month, which is reflected by the pickup in medium

and long-term lending and the continuous increase in bond financing. Looking ahead, such structural improvement is likely to co

ntinue, further boosting the supportive role of “loose credit supply” in “stabilizing growth.”

From the external perspective, the following three factors are expected to support the Chinese

yuan’s exchange rate to regain long-term stability, thus enhancing the autonomy of China’s monetary policy.

First, developed economies have slowed their pace of tightening. Since the end of 2018, due to the stalling global recovery and

signs of a returning crisis, central banks of various developed economies have become more cautious toward the no

rmalization of monetary policy. The European Central Bank, the Bank of England, and the Reserve Bank of Australia successively lowered their fo

recast for economic growth. In the US, the dovish voice inside the Fed has gradually increased. Because of this, si

nce late January, the yield inversion of short-term government bonds in China and the US has been eased. Thus, despite the

monetary policy differentiation between China and other major developed economies, the degree of d

ivergence is expected to decline, weakening the long-term pressure on the yuan’s exchange rate.

Germany claims the crown for record gathering of smurfs

group of German friends claimed a world record on Saturday for the highest number of smurfs gathered in one place.

Fans of the blue elf-like creatures created in a Belgian comic strip during the 1950s, managed to gathe

r 2,762 people dressed and painted blue in regulation smurf attire – curly hats and all.

The gathering took place at the town of Lauchringen, near the German border with Switzerland, the organizers reported on Facebook.

Their record came three years after their first attempt failed to beat the record held by Welsh s

tudents who managed to unite 2,510 regulation smurfs in Swansea back in 2009.

The German’s first effort failed, with only 2,149 turning up.

The rules of the game are strict: The only people counted as the genuine art

icle are those with any bare skin painted blue and the rest of the body clothed in smurf attire.

The group of friends made their second, victorious attempt on Saturday with the backing of the mayor of Lauchringen, they said.

The smurfs, small, impish creatures who live in a village, were created by the Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known as Peyo.

They became so popular that the stories eventually spilled over into cartoons and even live-action films.

Many private enterprises pledged equity to borrow money

stock or real estate investment, instead of investing in their main business, which is not recommended. What we should encourage is tha

t companies should finance R&D and technology, which is conducive to economic development.

Cai Fang, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

What lies behind the economic slowdown is the disappearance of the demographic dividend, which has ca

used a decline in the potential growth rate, meaning there is no longer a gap between actual growth rat

es and potential rates. Now, the natural unemployment rate has climbed from 4 to 5 percent, indicating there is no cyc

lical unemployment at present and thus excessive strong stimulus is unnecessary.

The government should focus policymaking on public employment services like

training and appropriately use macroeconomic policy tools to regulate the economy.

Lou Jiwei, chairman of the National Council for Social Security Fund

Industrial policy played a certain role in the early economic developmen

t stage, but later, the actual role of industrial policy was not all positive. Take the auto ind

ustry as an example. The current “big three” private car manufa

cturers have basically broken the constraints of industrial policies to grow up.

As the West steps up its criticism of Myanmar over the Rohin

Rakhine issues, the country’s relations with the West have deteriorated. China is one of the few powers

Myanmar can rely on. There is vast cooperation potential between the two countries. China and Myanmar can a

dvance industrial cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, the China-M

yanmar Economic Corridor and the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor. How to unleash M

yanmar’s huge development potential with the help of China should be placed on the NLD government’s planning agenda.

As Myanmar’s largest neighbor, China will continue to play an active role in promoting Myanmar’s nat

ional reconciliation and addressing the Rakhine issue as well as build mechanism for talks. It will assist My

anmar as much as it can. When investing in Myanmar, Chinese ente-invested projects, driven by nationalism an

d so-called environmental concern, are of no help in improving the country’s investment environment, and have hijacked economic development. Res

pecting the spirit of the contract is a basic requirement for modern states and their peoplrprises should pay attention to th

eir social responsibility. They should also address local people’s suspicions and misunderstandings on Chinese-inve

sted projects. We have reasons to believe that the prospect for China-Myanmar cooperation under the Belt and Road framework is promising.

Moreover, the number of Chinese who go abroad is closely

residents’ disposable income levels and income growth. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that in 2017, the per ca

pita disposable income of the high-income group reached 64,934 yuan ($9,604.71). For most of the residents in the high-inco

me group, overseas tours remain as a kind of luxury spending, thus the per capita disposable income for residents that traveled abroad

should be raised to at least 120,000 yuan a year. Yet this group probably numbers less than 100 mil

lion residents. In other words, the number of people who can afford the average cost of going abroad is theoretically less than 100 million.

Although many research institutions are optimistic about the development pr

ospects for Chinese people’s overseas tourism, the growth rate of private outbound trip

s was only 5.7 percent in 2017, compared to 22 percent in 2010 and 10.6 percent in 2015, showing a do

wnward trend. This may actually reflect the decline in the growth rate of disposable income.

I don’t agree with the so-called “consumption downgrade,” as the Engel coefficient – the propor

tion of money spent on food in household expenses – fell to 28.4 in 2018. Yet, the slowdown in consumption growth, increased leverage r

atio in home purchases and other factors have all impeded the pace of the consumption upgrade.
